Looking for a great read?
Over our vacation in Maui, I read a fantastic book that I hope to spread the word on. Its a New York Times Bestseller and was recommended to me by two separate friends. The book is "Three Cups of Tea - One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School At A Time". I suggested this book to my book club, but, I think that people didn't necessarily want to read another book about the middle east. We just finished "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini a few months ago. Like "The Kite Runner", Hosseini's second book was really sad and depressing despite his great story telling skills. "Three Cups of Tea" is not depressing at all, but, quite the opposite. It is a very hopeful and inspiring book describing the amazing story of how one man, Greg Mortenson, befriends a community of various people in Pakistan and Afghanistan who allow him to help bring a well rounded education to their remote and needy communities. At present, Greg Mortenson and his CIA nonprofit has helped to build about 61 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan especially for girls.
The book reads like an exciting novel beginning with his extreme trek attempting to climb K2 to a kidnapping, gun battles, tea with the Taliban amongst many other scenes you wouldn't imagine.
If you do buy the book, you should do it through the Three Cups of Tea website at: . 7% of that purchase will go to the charity run by Greg Mortenson.
