Sabine in Pemba

Our volunteer Sabine from Rostock/Germany sent us some very nice pictures of her volunteering job in an Islamic school on the island of Pemba. Sabine, who is studying in her 4th year at Rostock university to become a teacher of English and History for secondary education in grammar school found her volunteering placement particularly professionally and personally enriching. Having been almost the only white person in the whole town of Wete she understood how it is like to be "different" than the others. Although she didn't have any negative experiences in that regard (besides children on the street permanently calling her "Mzungu" - white person), Sabine wants to communicate this experience to the pupils she is teaching in a school in Rostock/Germany, a city in Eastern Germany which has severe problems with xenophobia. Also, teaching in an Islamic school gave her insights into and better understanding of a world which was completely new to her.
